During my teenage years, turning 16 didn't matter much to me. My primary focus was on catching the attention of the cute guys I had a crush on. At the time, I couldn't discern if it was just immaturity on my part or a reflection of the times when such things held lesser significance.

Fast forward to adulthood, and I've come to appreciate the importance of celebrating each stage of a girl's life. The sixteenth birthday, in particular, marks a significant step toward womanhood. As a big sister who has learned valuable lessons, I aim to ensure that the upcoming generations in my family create their own memorable moments. (I look forward to sharing more meticulously planned birthdays and events with my family.)

One such celebration was the Slumber Party I organized for my cousin on her 16th birthday. She was spending the summer with us, and since her mom was out of town on her birthday, coupled with our recent move to a new house, I thought a slumber party would be the perfect welcome. While slumber parties aren't a common tradition in the Philippines due to cultural norms, I was delighted when my aunt agreed to host it at our place.

My cousin's birthday fell on May 22nd, but we decided to hold the slumber party on the 21st as a prelude to the midnight celebration. Given the limited budget in the absence of my aunt, we had to get creative. Here's how we pulled it off:

DIY Decoration

We took on the task of decorating with balloons and printed pictures. A downloadable unicorn banner from Pinterest added a magical touch. Hanging the photos with lights on the wall created a dramatic effect, especially in pictures.

DIY Invitation & Mask

Despite the small guest list of four, I crafted a Unicorn Slumber Party invitation using Canva. Canva's versatility has proven invaluable for both work and personal projects. I also found a unicorn mask on Pinterest, though I regrettably didn't note the website.

Slumber Activities & Foods

The heart of the day lay in the activities and food. We opted for simplicity in the food department—pizza, pasta, doughnuts, popcorn, and some junk foods, complemented by an affordable yet delicious cake. I firmly believe that taste matters more than appearance when it comes to cakes.

No slumber party is complete without movies, so we curated a list of chick flicks and a playlist of Taylor Swift's quintessential songs. Our version of "smores" involved candles instead of a campfire.

Staying up until midnight, we counted down the seconds, akin to New Year's Eve, to welcome my cousin's birthday on the 22nd of May. The balloon-pricking ceremony accompanied by shouts of "Happy Birthday" became the highlight of the day, making it a unique and unforgettable experience.

In total, we spent only 3,000 PHP for everything. While not extravagant, the party had a cute charm, especially evident in the pictures. This birthday remains one of the best for my cousin, and I take pride in orchestrating a distinctive, enjoyable celebration within a minimal budget. It's a memory I'll always fondly look back on.
